The tool proceeds by analyzing all the components of the workbook.
The complete audit report is produced, in Microsoft Word, and saved
in the same directory as the original file. The audit report provides
a full analysis of the workbook including the following important
information:
-
A listing of each worksheet, module, user form, chart, and pivot
table contained in the workbook. These listings can be used to
identify inefficient or obsolete components of the workbook to
be revised or deleted.
-
The “used range” in each worksheet, which may indicate large
areas of blank cells creating unnecessary overhead.
-
A list of named ranges, global and local, grouped by worksheet.
The use of global versus local names is a common area of confusion
and users may be inadvertently referring to the wrong range name
in formulas and models. These should be reviewed to ensure names
are used correctly, and to identify obsolete or invalid names
to be modified or deleted.
-
A list of the links to external workbooks and to real-time market
data links by type is also provided, as well as a list of references
to DLL’s and other external code dependencies. These items can
cause significant overhead and need to be reviewed carefully.
-
Worksheet functions are counted and analyzed, and a list of calculation
intensive and frequently misused functions is provided.
-
A list of any VBA routines that exist in code modules, class
modules, worksheets, workbooks, and user forms.
Detailed Audit Reports
In addition to the Workbook Audit Report, the user has the option
of generating three additional reports. Each report provides a detailed
description of a specific section of the Workbook Audit Report. The
following are the detailed reports:
