Tip #2000-10: Forcing Excel to display live data in 32nds
Is there a way to make Excel display fractions in 32nds? I've tried the number format
# ??/??, but it always converts to the smallest denominator. For example, I'd like to display
.5 as 16/32, not 1/2.
To display Excel fractions in 32nds, simply revise this number format
in the textbox labeled Type to # ??/32. This will convert
the number to the nearest 32nd, displaying 0.5 as 16/32 rather than 1/2.

However, if you're working primarily with Treasury data, you may want to display only the
numerator - the 16, not the 32. To help you do this, Excel has two add-in functions that
convert decimals to fractions and vice-versa.
The two functions mentioned in this tip are actually part of an Excel Add-In. You must
load the Add-In to use the functions.
To load the Add-In:
- Pull-down the Tools menu
and choose Add-Ins...
- Excel 5.0 users: Select the checkbox
for MS Excel 4.0 Add-in Functions
- Excel 7.0 or Excel 97 users: Select
the checkbox for Analysis ToolPak
