Tip #2000-6: Opening Excel workbooks automatically on startup
Is there a way to open a specific group of
workbooks automatically every time I open Excel?
There are at least two ways to open a group of workbooks automatically:
- You can put the workbook files
in the XLSTART directory. Tell
me more
- Network users: you can create
an alternate startup directory and put the files you want to open
automatically in that directory. Tell
me more
If the workbooks you want opened have real-time data, you still
cannot walk away when you open Excel. Each time a workbook with
remote references opens, you'll get the message:

You need to click Yes each time a workbook with live data
updates. If you want to avoid this process and have your worksheets
open and begin updating real-time data without your needing
to be present, you must change the Automatic Links setting.
To change your automatic links setting:
- Choose
Options... from the Tools menu
- Click
the Edit tab.
- Make
sure there is no check next to Ask To Update Automatic
Links. Show me.
- Click
OK
You'll need to restart Excel for the changes to take effect. Next time
you start Excel, all the workbooks stored in XLSTART sub-directory
or in your alternate startup directory will open, and the real-time
links will be updated without the Update Links message box appearing.
