Tip #1999-12: Using dates in Excel

Excel 5.0c users: creating your own custom format for a yyyy date

Select the cells containing dates, then select Format Number, select Custom from the list box, then type into the Code: box. You might try dd/mmm/yyyy. This format would display your dates as 28/Feb/1995.
