Has anyone dealt with the COM automation problem of inconsistent 'call rejected by callee' errors?

I'm automating Exel from a separate app to open up a workbook with Bloomberg DDE links, fire off a macro, and close/save it.

More than 25% of the time I will get the above error on calls to the Excel Objects I am using. (But absolutely not consistent on which call.)

If anyone is remotely familiar with this problem, I would greatly appreciate any help. I'm close to the edge.
