Excel autamation and reuters 3000xtra

I am starting excel from vb via the

objXl = createObject("Excel.Application").
...
...
objxl.visible = true
calls, howver I notice that this does not start the reuters data engine etc etc. however when i start excel from start menu it starts it. why is it so?
